Sunday Cinema: Shoplifters

January 20 4:30 to 6:30 pm

On the margins of Tokyo, a Japanese couple stuck with part-time jobs have to shoplift to make ends meet. They are not alone in this behaviour. This dysfunctional band of outsiders are united by fierce loyalty, but when the couple open their doors to a beleaguered young girl the family's habit and their motivations come under the microscope. The young son is arrested and secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence and test their quietly radical belief that it is love—not blood—that defines a family.

"It's impossible to experience the deep-seated compassion of this film and not be moved to tears." - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
