Rossland Mayor on response to the U.S.

Here's the mayor's stance on how Rossland should face the current situation with the US. Agree or disagree, it's worth knowing. From this article: https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/news/news/Provincial/Amid_tariff_... "In Rossland, B.C., Mayor Andy Morel, said the "beautiful little mountain community" in the Kootenays needed to walk a "fine line" in not upsetting their U.S. neighbours, who are a big part of the local economy. He said 60 to 75 per cent of the city's economy was driven by American tourists, with the city well known for its skiing and mountain biking culture. "From the perspective of wanting to support our own economy, we do rely on U.S. visitors strongly, and we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot … if we started to boycott and to bad mouth our American tourists and friends on the other side of the border," said Morel." Town: Rossland, BC ![]() |

Keep them coming!!! They are all nice people and none that would bother coming would not like our place. If they didn't, they would not come. I spent years going into the USA, and was treated well by all.

Invite them over like this mayor did!
The level of Trump derangement syndrome in this country is insane. People absolutely triggered over Trump and Elon fail to reflect on the woke drama teacher that led our country into the ground and created this reality.
It's important that we not stand up for decent human dignity and risk pissing off the facist americans so that we can keep getting that sweet tourist money. "Supporting" our local economy while the tariffs attack our economy.
Fight the man and sell the mountain to America.
lol thanks for that reminder on "fighting the man" who turned out to be led by "the man"
the joke of the year
It's Corporate Greed that's the Issue. Anyone still blaming Trump or Truedau for High pr es or thinks Axe the Carbon Tax will make any difference is delusional or Just a Maga Canadian. Americans won't have any issues in Rossland Rossland is in Love with Trump and Half of Red Vilalage is owned by MAGA Americans. It's the Vancouver,Seattle,Anyone from Kelowna that's not Far Right and White that gets bullied in Rossland. No we're A- OK with Yankee Dollars and MAGA Yanks in Fact we want too be 51. It's hilarious these people who play like were some easy going g friendly town when in Fact were a Nasty Bullying passive aggressive Town. I guess it's funnier too have people fall into a Trap? Ha Got ha! Haha
Our downtown businesses absolutely rely on our American visitors. Without them coming frequently and shopping at our stores and supporting our restaurants I think many of us would shut down for good.
The people who will be hurt the most by these tariffs are business owners - both Canadian and American. Something to keep in mind too, is that many businesses rely on the US for different things that support their day to day operations. Ingredients for products made, supplies to support the operation of retail outlets, etc etc. There are numerous ways this tariff war is going to cause harm.
Boycotting and cancelling businesses full stop overnight is going to be an absolute disaster for businesses. And its not the fault of businesses that this is happening. Shopping local should be a sustained, longterm initiative that everyone tries to do their best with as much as they can as often as they can - buying local should not be treated as the next overnight "trend". Rollercoaster rides like this for businesses are just a nightmare.
There is an important distinction between boycotting American policy and welcoming American Tourists. Millions of Americans are allies with us in this, we are always better off keeping alliances and discussion alive around contentious issues.
Agreed!
I added into the conversation here this urgency going around to boycott businesses on either side.
Canadians boycotting American businesses/products, or vice versa - Americans boycotting Canadian businesses/products is just going to add to the harm these tariffs are already causing to businesses. Lobbying politicians on both sides to end this tariff war is a form of support I think business owners need.
I agree too - many Americans do not support Trump starting this tariff BS. But many do.
I think that people might be surprised how badly these tariffs are going to harm businesses right here in Rossland. Its pretty scary.
That said - I hope that Rossland continues to welcome American visitors with open arms. These visitors are always so happy to be here, and are extremely supportive of our businesses here. Thank goodness we have so many that come to town.
As posted above, we can boycott US made goods without alienating American tourists.
And yes, this should be an ongoing thing. I used to pay more attention and have become complacent but no more. I'm looking at labels diligently, buying Canadian first, from our other trading partners second, from anywhere else but US third or fourth: going without. I understand that's not possible for everyone but every little bit helps. It doesn't matter what your political leanings are, this is going to hurt all of Canadians, as well as Amercans.
