What happened at the council meeting about tax increase?

Can someboyd fill me in?  Im out of town for awhile, thanks.

Sorry, posted wrong link in error.

Council and Mayor ignored all residents concerns and voted in the 10% tax increase. Who cares if Rossland becomes unaffordable. According to them if you can't afford to live here you can just move to somewhere with lower taxes.

Residents ignored all concerns and voted to kick the infrastructure can down the road. Who cares if Rossland falls apart, it won't affect me, I want lower taxes NOW. According to them if you can't afford to clean up the mess they've left you can just move to somewhere with lower taxes.

WTF you think they're using the money for? Poor planning in the past has led to the shortcoming.

Holding the public meeting so close to the submission deadline (May 15th) made it ineffective and pretty much for appearances only. With only one week before the submission deadline, the CFO, Mike Kennedy, is out of the office which makes it seem like there is neither the capacity to, nor interest in, making any changes. To be honest, I'm not sure Council has the power, either functional or perceived, to order changes.

The outcome is very disappointing and frustrating. However, Council are good people doing their best. It needs to be recognized, Council is defending the decisions of staff. Staff should have been in the hot seat at the public meeting defending the big dollars proposed. Staff are insulated by Council. I think we need to shift our perspective on the structure here and make the spenders defend their budgets.

Seeing those free EV chargers as you arrive at the building doesn't look like being concerned about costs. As I was told, "this is council just virtual signalling"  The EV's already don't pay road taxes ,they do not need us to also pay for their charging costs. They are expensive to buy and most people in Rossland I know, who have EV's, have chargers at home.  So if you want to "virtual signal" something that will benefit the majority of town...put in a free gas pump. Sounds absolutely ridiculous....so does free electricity to mostly visitors, free to cab companies.  Wake up council, your driving families and seniors out of town.

Are the chargers free? I used one once at the new city hall and was charged through my FLO account. Low rate but still a paid service. But as you said, I charge pretty exclusively at home.

Lot of low information people here .. free chargers? where? its paid just like everywhere else.
The tax raise is more like 6% but you wouldn't understand this because you didn't attend / listen.
Mismanagement? How about the RDKB with a 34% increase?
Why didn't you attend the previous 2 sessions/readings and wait until the third reading? You get your information from Facebook and Bhubble, I'm not surprised half of people are out to lunch.

Actively participate in your local government, articulate your concerns & stop crying on Facebook/Bhubble lol.

Interesting. The councillor didn't correct me when I said they were free. My mistake. Sorry I haven't attended more meetings but I have not been out of my house for long in 5 yrs due to medical reasons, again my fault. Still everyone must admit that the taxes in this resort town are forcing many to move out.
Now if we could just get you EVers to pay road taxes like the rest of us.

Anyone who moved to this area in the last decade or so should have done their homework...the infrastructure is as old as dirt! Research the costs associated with replacing it all.

Any city that is a highly desirable place to live draws in people with money. People with money can afford to live here. That's the way life works. Go try to live in Whistler, Victoria, Vancouver, Mississauga, the Muskokas & see what they are paying for taxes.

Living here takes money.  There are lots of places, beautiful places that are less 'desirable' to the masses with super low taxes. Again, this is how our society works. Bitching about the mayor & council is disrespectful and useless. Run for council now while you still know everything!!

@Farmer Jon and @Ricky LaFluer this is a community forum. People are suppose to express their opinions. Why insult and shut them down? Condescending, angry and emotional comments are troll behaviour. Nasty to read and can't feel good to think or write. Let's communicate respectfully. Go toward the light gentlemen :) :)

Well said dj2074.  Questioning how govt operates is our responsibility. Misinformation is unfortunate but a simple correction is adequate. Absolutely no disrespect for council and the mayor. I spent almost 20 yrs representing a small town to the Capital Regional District.  I know how hard they work and I appreciate them all. Will I question their methods. Sometimes.  Let's get along, it's a small town fighting big problems

Last post here...

Get serious. If you feel that my post was 'shutting you down' you need some help.

Any city has a budget. If you question the allocation of funds- do so.

If you have zero idea about what it costs to run a City...keep bitching about it here. Chances are you are not a serious stakeholder in the lives of the test of us and your departure will be marked as such.
