Film Screening at the Museum: Beyond Extinction

June 21 3:30 to 5:15 pm

As part of our National Indigenous Peoples Day activities, join us at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, June 21st for a free, community screening of Beyond Extinction: A Sinixt Resurgence, a critically-acclaimed, award-winning film that traces Sinixt matriarchs who revive traditions and fight to save an ancient burial ground in the Slocan Valley.

Beyond Extinction, a 2022 feature documentary by Governor General’s Award-winning filmmaker Ali Kazimi, documents three decades of Indigenous struggle by the Sinixt people, whose traditional territories are in Southwest British Columbia and the USA, divided by the border. The film traces through generations how the Indian Act, colonialism, residential schools, and borders led to the Canadian government declaring the Sinixt people to be “extinct.” It weaves together observational footage, contemporary interviews, oral histories, and survival stories told by matriarchs, personal as well as public archives, to tell a story never told before.
