Recognizing k̓maʔrqn̓: Territory Sign Unveiling

Long before Red Mountain had mines or moguls, our mountain home was known by a different name: k̓maʔrqn̓, meaning "flat top." Join us at the Rossland Museum from 4-6 pm on Friday, June 14th as we unveil a territory acknowledgement sign to recognize k̓marʔqn̓ and the Sinixt people on whose unceded tmxʷúlaʔxʷ we live and work. The sign was crafted by a Sinixt artist and member of the Sinixt and Nespelem bands of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, Spirit Peoples, in consultation with Sinixt knowledge-keepers. This hand-carved sign features representations of the traditional oral history story about the mountain goat and the origin of the huckleberry at Kettle Falls. We'll also be showing a new short film, "Learning mxiɬp," in our theatre, and provide plenty of time for everyone to admire the sign and mix and mingle over snacks. The ceremony begins at 5 pm.
