Parenting in a pandemic has its challenges – as well as offering some amazing opportunities to connect with our kids.  We know that parents and children are experiencing higher levels of stress overall.  There are many ‘unknowns’ and many of our normal supports or programs are either not running at all, or are modified in their delivery – which may or may not be convenient for families, depending on your situation.

When COVID first landed back in the Spring of this year, the family Action Network (FAN) partnered with Thoughtexchange to offer parents the opportunity to let us know what you need, how local service providers can support you and what issues are most present for you.  We had over 135 responses, and building on those responses we were able to partner with local service providers and offer such supports as: Parenting in Pandemic, an online workshop with clinician Sean Larsen; Teddy Bear Picnic Outdoor Activity Bingo (rather than in person event); COVID resource directory (found on the FAN website); ArtBoxes; suggested titles to local libraries to bring in more ‘unplugged family activity’ books; virtual Ages and Stages events to help you gain insights and resources about your child’s development.

Families have had some time now to settle in to our ‘new norm’ and school for the older kids (for those families who have decided to send them) has begun. As we move into Fall, we would like to offer you the opportunity to again consider how FAN and its member organizations can continue to provide supports to you and your family. The collective knowledge gathered will help inform our planning efforts around COVID-19 and how we can continue to support families in our region.
