Downtown Businesses Closing
Submitted by bikeskiswim on Tue, 03/09/2024 - 2:43pm
So we have already lost two downtown businesses this year, with a third closing imminently and rumour of atleast two more to follow. How as a community can we come together and support our local shops so more do not close their doors? Personally, I have made it a point to be ever more conscious of where I spend my money. Some things I have done - I no longer shop at places like Walmart. I stopped doing this 100% a couple of years ago, and believe this is by far the biggest thing we can do. Almost everything they sell we can find here, and almost always better quality. Why should we give our money to big box stores who don't give back to and support our community? Bear Country Kitchen has virtually anything you need for your kitchen, and they will almost always bring something in if you need it. Rooted Table is an incredible store filled with local products, and is probably the best place to buy gifts in town in my opinion. I go to Sister Sister for all of my natural cleaning needs, which is just the best. I do not purchase new footwear that often, but the last two pairs were both from Red Pair, Steph and team are fantastic and have a good selection of mens wear. I also stopped buying no name underwear that is bad for you (read up on non-organic cotton around your nether regions) and have become the biggest fan of Huha found at Curiosity.
I am deeply worried for small businesses in our town. It doesn't take much time commitment to speaking with our local business owners to realize how much they really need our support right now,
Any thoughts? Other ideas? Other suggestions of great finds here in town? I did see that bhubble thread not long ago about what is missing downtown - but I want to start a brainstorming conversation on how we can support what we already have, before more doors close. Town: Rossland, BC |

Which businesses do you think are closing?
I'm more than happy to check them out to see if I can help support!
What doesn't help is having golden city days at the arena.
Yes which two businesses closed and which are at risk of closing? That would be helpful to know.
the one I know of that's closing is the gear store
The gear store isn't exacly closing, they're moving to Nelson. Their business model requires a larger customer base to be succesful. It seems to be that most of the downtown businesses are doing fairly well. Sure there have been a few that haven't lasted but in my opinion some of them have been poor business models (a yarn store, that wierd refill soap store, throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-if-sticks oops I meant Stoked float) that probably weren't going to last anyways. If it's a poorly run business or just a bad idea it's not up to the community to try and keep it open. The shops that are doing well are doing a great job, that's why they're doing well. Try finding a parking spot downtown after 10 am, it's not like it's not busy downtown.
Well, 2 much needed business' that will do very well just opened up.
Rossland Lumber, which opened up at the perfect time for my very large reno and has great staff, lotsa stuff and will get you what you need!
In the wake of the Redtop Barbershop closing we now have a family service hairsalon in the space called Lupin Studio Lupinstudio.ca
There are lots of core business' here in town that are doing amazing. Business' come and go for many many reasons. Chat with your business owners about what you'd like to see regarding products and services. Ask them how they are doing... This is what helps us survive too.
Thank you to all the clients that I had the privilidge of providing services for and relationships I was able to build and grow during my time as a business owner/service provider. For medical reasons, it was time to hang up my scissors and change gears.

I don't want to share specific business names, I think that's up to them to share publicly if they want to. This was more just a post to encourage folks to get out there and explore our shops, talk to our small business owners, and by golly, support them every darn chance you get.
I wasn't thinking about Redtop when I mentioned three busineses closed this year, so I guess that makes four. Great news about a new salon opening up, I am sure many people will be excited.
Yes the gear shop is moving to Nelson, but isn't it wild that our bustling community of recreationists can't support that store enough to make it worth it to stay? Who knows why a business ends up choosing to close, there are definitely many, many reasons. But in a year where inflation is high, money is tight, sales are down, and doors are closing I am sure we can all agree that going the extra mile to support what we have here is definitely not a bad idea.
